Montreuil-Sur-Mer: Emotion guaranteed!
Montreuil-sur-Mer, Port-Royal between 987 and 1204, classified as a 4-star flowery city, is a fortified city, built during the reign of Saint-Louis, dominating the valley of the Canche by 40 meters.
Despite the “sur-Mer” particle, this small medieval town is not located by the sea. Indeed, Montreuil-Sur-Mer, linked to the royal domain in 987, became the only seaport of the Capetians until the sand engulfed the Canche (1204).
Philippe Auguste, King of France (1165/1223,) built an imposing castle and consolidated the urban wall. Due to its geographical location, Montreuil-Sur-Mer would suffer much looting and degradation over the centuries. In 1537, the city, assaulted by the troops of Charles V and Henry VIII, was largely destroyed.
Charles IX (1550/1574) ordered the construction of a citadel in place of the old castle. A century later, Vauban, a famous architect, would carry out some transformations.
Rebuilt in the 19th century, this locality is today recognised as one of the most beautiful towns on the Opal Coast to explore. The fortifications and the citadel received, in 913 and 1926, the title of historic monuments.
Your guide will show you the captivating history of this authentic and friendly town, witness to a medieval past, endowed with remarkable architecture. Typical houses, cobbled streets, especially the unmissable rue du Clape-En-Bas, picturesque alleys, old buildings, mansions, the city is full of wonders!
Did you know that Victor Hugo, during a brief visit to Montreuil-Sur-Mer, found his inspiration to write part of his work “Les Miserables”? Jean Valjean, ex-convict became mayor of the town and Fantine, Cosette’s mother, was born in Montreuil …
That’s not all, Montreuil-Sur-Mer is also an impressive culinary heritage, rich in local, local and fresh products that you are sure to savour.
